In 1977, he made his stage comeback in David Mamet’s play American Buffalo, for which he was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Play.
In 1962, he acted in his first feature picture, To Kill a Mockingbird, as Boo Radley. Captain Newman, M.D. (1963), Bullitt (1968), True Grit (1969), M*A*S*H (1970), THX 1138 (1971), Joe Kidd (1972), and Tomorrow (1972) are some of his other early parts.
