Although Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban are currently enjoying a happily ever after, she hasn’t always had such luck in love.
Sometimes it’s easy to forget that she and Tom Cruise went through a contentious divorce that dominated tabloid headlines during their eleven-year marriage, which lasted from 1990 to 2001.
Even though the years have gone, their relationship’s disintegration is still worth reading about, and fresh details are continuously emerging. In the middle of chaos and despair, Kidman recently shared details about one of the most emotionally turbulent times in her remarkable career—a moment that ultimately led to what is likely her greatest triumph.
The actress’s admirers will be well aware that Kidman and Cruise divorced just before she was awarded an Oscar in 2003 for her performance as Virginia Woolf in The Hours. In the ten years prior to their marriage, Cruise and Kidman had made a name for themselves as one of Hollywood’s power couples. They went on to adopt two children, Connor, 28, and Isabella, 31, together. Sadly, it collapsed after a period of eleven years.
The couple would eventually get a divorce, though Kidman couldn’t have asked for a worse moment for it to end. After starring in The Hours, the actress received an Academy Award nomination; however, her divorce with Cruise overshadowed what should have been one of her career’s high points.
Even though Kidman received her first and only Oscar, she has since stated that her big night was marred by events in her personal life.
She claimed, as reported by People, “I went home and ended up ordering takeout and eating it on the floor of the Beverly Hills Hotel,” in an interview with author Dave Karger for his new book 50 Oscar Nights. My family and I ate a burger and French fries on the hotel floor before I went to bed. I realized at that point. I went, “I need to find love; I need a relationship with someone.” Because this is the appropriate moment to declare, “This is ours.”
“I went to bed alone; I was in bed before midnight,” she continued. I’m telling you, if I ever won again, I would be out for a full day.
Kidman’s story, fortunately, ended happily. The 56-year-old married Keith Urban five years following her split from Cruise. The couple, who marked their 17th wedding anniversary last year, has two daughters: Faith Margaret, 12, and Sunday Rose, 14 years old.
